President Obama's Attack On The First Amendment

Dissent: U.S. veterans take to the barricades after the White House tries to deny them their right to gather, a mere week after the administration lets a pro-illegal immigration rally take place. Our rights are under siege.
Richard M. Nixon, when faced with massive demonstrations during the Vietnam War, at least had the courage to leave the White House and speak with the assembled young demonstrators. And, contrary to his image, he didn't sic the police on them.
Not so President Barack H. Obama.
Thousands of vets stormed the World War II Memorial on the National Mall Sunday — tearing down the barricades that blocked access to our national monuments — in protest over the government shutdown.
Tea Party stalwarts Sen. Mike Lee and Sen. Ted Cruz, along with former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin spoke to the vet groups — no doubt infuriating the White House. Meanwhile, veterans, truckers, bikers and others chanted "Tear Down These Walls" and sang
patriotic songs.
As Doug Mainwaring of the American Thinker reported, "People drove through the night or flew in the day before from as far away as Florida, Louisiana and California. One active-duty soldier flew in from Germany just to participate in the two-hour rally, and rushed off to fly back so he wouldn't be AWOL on Monday."
And Obama's response to this "Million Vet March" — which included an "Honor Flight" of World War II veterans — and its display of patriotic emotion?
He sent in federal police. At one point, a government helicopter even hovered ominously over the gathering to harass the crowd, a shameful insult to all Americans who have ever served.
Imagine, during a government "shutdown," Obama spends money to erect barriers and pay police to keep people away from their national monuments — a twisted sense of priorities to say the least.
That the president would treat those who have served, and continue to serve, in the military with such contempt and vindictiveness is a great disgrace.
After all, they were merely exercising their First Amendment rights. Wasn't that why many of them served in the first place, to protect our rights?
It's not just vets, either.
This follows days of petty harassment of tourists and foreign visitors at the nation's national parks and museums by U.S. government officials, eager to ratchet up the pain for everyone — everyone, that is, but themselves and those who agree with them.
Contrast Obama's treatment of the vets with how he handled the immigration reform rally held last Tuesday, also on the "shut-down" National Mall.
Obama gave organizers special permission to hold the rally in D.C., despite the shutdown — and despite the plain fact that many of those participating live here in open violation of U.S. law.
Led by unions, far-left open-border advocacy groups and "progressive" politicians such as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, the "March for Immigrant Dignity and Respect" had the welcome mat rolled out.
"They allowed us to have it because it is part of the First Amendment of the Constitution," Susana Flores, spokeswoman for the illegal immigrant advocacy group CASA In Action, told the Daily Caller.
First Amendment for progressives, illegal immigrants and their advocates, but not for other Americans — including veterans. What has become of America?
