The Soros Fallacies On Europe

One World Government: Hedge fund manager and "stateless statesman" George Soros has been shoring up the European Union, advocating for it as the embodiment of his Open Society vision and, now, as a bulwark against a resurgent, menacing Russia. He gets it wrong on every front.

The famous left-wing speculator, who made himself a billionaire by shorting the British pound in 1992, ironically is now billing himself as an advocate for Britain by trying to persuade British voters to say "yes" to staying in the European Union in an upcoming referendum.

In a Financial Times op-ed Wednesday, Soros said the EU had inspired his one-world philosophy, which he calls the Open Society. "I came to see what became the EU as the embodiment of the open society and became its lifelong supporter," he wrote.

Got that? The EU with all its political correctness, overbearing bureaucracy, intolerance of diversity and lack of respect for the unique histories and cultural identities of its nation-states is Soros' own vision.

No wonder his Open Society Foundations focus on gun control, open borders, repression of religion, open jails, ending patriotism and curtailing freedom.

All that's crumbling as Britain moves away from the EU. Soros can't let that happen.

Sounding like Voltaire's Dr. Pangloss, Soros claims Britain "has the best of all possible deals with Europe," citing its access to a single market for exports with no "burden of being a member of the eurozone."

But in fact, Britain does have a burden — it pays way more to the EU than it gets in return. Britain is in effect subsidizing the EU's hulking bureaucracy, with little in return.

Trying to tug on heart strings, Soros also cites his affection for Britain for issuing him a passport, as a child escaping 1947 Hungary, as a reason for Britain to take his advice.

But he cleverly avoids the fact that the existence of an alternative passport from another nation was exactly what enabled him to escape. Were there a single, continent-wide passport in Europe in 1947, he'd have remained behind the Iron Curtain.

Most unexpectedly, he cites the threat from Russia as the reason that Britain must stay in the European Union.

"If Britain were to leave, Europe would be fighting for its very survival," Soros warned.

It's possible he's alluding to the 13 original colonies "hanging together or hanging separately," but in the EU there is only the tragedy of the commons.

EU states have repeatedly leaned on Germany for money and Britain for military readiness, while feathering their own welfare nests. That's made the EU weak — and Putin's macho Russia a threat.

The EU seems to know this. Along with a recent surge in national identity against the EU superstate, there are the beginnings of a defense buildup, particularly in the frontline Baltic states, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Soros' own Hungary.

Hungary in particular is an interesting case, not just because it has defied the EU's open immigration policy in the interest of preserving its unique national identity, but because its leaders and press have also been Soros' severest critics.

They know him all too well.

The rest of Europe should be so wise. Soros won't stop here. This is only the beginning of his pushback in Europe. His Open Society Foundations are actively working to undermine sovereign states, as can readily be seen in its recent efforts to encourage a massive flood of Syrian refugees.

That's a threat to individual nations, but a boon for the European superstate. It's a subversive agenda to halt what remains of European freedom.
