Commerce: For the second year in a row, Black Lives Matter protestors have disrupted retail trade at Minnesota's Mall of America on one of the busiest shopping days of the year. It's nothing but looting by another name.

Presumably the purpose of a protest is to attract attention to one's cause. That police shootings have led the news and are at the top of the White House's agenda isn't quite good enough for Black Lives Matter, because the loose social-media collective wants more than attention. It wants destruction.

Its latest protest at the Mall of America is explicitly intended to create economic losses as a means of shaking out concessions from "the establishment."

"When you disrupt their flow of capital ... they actually start paying attention," Kandace Montgomery, one of three known Black Lives Matter protest organizers, told the Associated Press. She also told WCCO, the Minneapolis CBS TV station: "Mall of America really is the coliseum of capitalism; in our day and age symbols are important. MOA is the perfect symbol of how money and resources are misallocated in this state."

That should make clear the protest is less about black lives than about a Marxist and Alinskyite agenda of making an innocent party to the alleged grievance pay.

The movement has gotten a lot of what it wants — a weak legal response, which has only encouraged the group to try to shut down other parts of the city, most recently the airport. A judge banned Montgomery and two others from protesting but failed to back the mall owner's right to remove the mob that's interfering with commerce on a critical day for retailers from his property.

Apparently, the judge mistook Black Lives Matter for a civil society organization seeking redress of grievances in the classic tradition. It's the opposite of that, a lawless social media mob of no accountability, where anything can happen. Last year, there were 25 arrests for rioting and thuggery among this group that, now emboldened, came back for more this year.

Fox News' Neil Cavuto reported that this year's retail losses could amount to more than $1 billion. That will hit host city Bloomington, which counts the mall as its top taxpayer and private employer with 13,000 jobs. Fox reported that already retail sales there were down about 25% as a result of the protest.

Retailers pay a premium to put their shops at the Mall of America, which draws 80,000 visitors a year, even as online sales create more competition than in the past.

The so-called protest — which, on private property, is frankly illegal — is downright theft.
