How I Exposed the Biggest Pharma Scandal of Our Lifetime

 Biggest Pharma Scandal Exposed

When I walked into the diner my source was already there, sitting in a booth. It was late summer of 2001 and, earlier that year, I had started writing articles for The New York Times about the growing abuse of a then little-known painkiller, OxyContin. Its maker, Purdue Pharma, was promoting the powerful narcotic to doctors as a “wonder” drug that was far safer from abuse and addiction than other pain pills.

How I Exposed the Biggest Pharma Scandal of Our Lifetime

Netflix hit ‘Painkiller’ shows how Purdue Pharma’s greed and deceit fueled a nationwide opioid epidemic. Barry Meier was the first to uncover the truth.

World Facing Food Crisis

 EVERYTHING IS GOING SWIMMINGLY:

‘A perfect storm for the whole food system right now’: One of the world’s largest fertilizer companies warns that every country—even those in Europe—is facing a food crisis.

When natural gas prices surged last year after Russia invaded Ukraine, so did prices for fertilizer, which manufacturers such as Yara produce with ammonia and nitrogen obtained as a byproduct from natural gas. Fertilizer prices had already begun increasing in 2021 due to high energy costs and supply-chain issues.

Declining natural gas prices and weak demand among farmers have eased pressures somewhat over the past few months. Earlier this month, fertilizer prices fell to their lowest level in nearly two years in tandem with natural gas prices. But despite falling prices, Holsether insists that the global fertilizer market is precarious, and countries should shift from relying on Russian natural gas, to safeguard their agricultural industries.

“Putin has weaponized energy and they’re weaponizing food as well,” Holsether told the BBC at last week’s World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. “It’s the saying, ‘Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.’”

Fertilizer prices remain high by historical standards, and the World Bank warned earlier this month that global supply is still tight due to the war, production cuts in Europe, and stricter export controls in China.

Trade is great. But putting US workers in competition with Third World wages hasn’t been great for them or for domestic manufacturing. And depending on potentially hostile and/or unstable regimes for vital inputs is just stupid.

UPDATE (FROM GLENN); Related: Looming food shortages is the next ‘slow-moving disaster’ to hit world. Not by accident.

LinkedIn Deletes Account of mRNA Vaccine Pioneer Who Questioned Risks of COVID-19 Shots

July 2, 2021 Updated: July 3, 2021

Dr. Robert Malone, who identifies himself as the inventor of mRNA vaccines, said that LinkedIn recently deleted his account after he made comments about mRNA COVID-19 vaccines and questioned whether they’re appropriate to give to certain groups of people.

“My business pays for linked in premium. I have been deleted,” Malone wrote on Twitter this week. “Purchased a service from linked in to promote my company. This is very different from the YouTube or Twitter terms. This arbitrary and capricious action has damaged our business, and we deserve to be compensated.”

It appears his personal account was removed earlier this week without warning or explanation from LinkedIn, a subsidiary of Microsoft, said his wife, Jill Malone.

“He was given no notice, no warnings,” she told Just the News. “He has a 10-15 year old account—has never even had a warning. 6,000 followers.”

Malone explained on Wednesday that the “historic record of what I have done, stated, figured out (and when) etc. over time is a key part of establishing my credibility and track record as a professional.” But despite this, the account “has been erased completely and arbitrarily without warning or explanation,” he added.

In a subsequent tweet, Malone produced an email from a LinkedIn representative, who said that his account violated the firm’s user agreement because he posted “misleading or inaccurate information” about vaccines and COVID-19.

“[LinkedIn] has provided a list of my thoughtcrimes. An amazing document,” Malone wrote.

The Epoch Times has contacted LinkedIn for comment.

Recently, Malone’s claims to Fox News and other news outlets about giving vaccines to individuals under the age of 18 were flagged by several so-called “fact-checking” sites. Malone told NTD’s “The Nation Speaks” in late June that heart inflammation reports shift the risk-benefit ratio for children.

“Vaccines save lives. These vaccines have saved lives,” Malone said, adding that believes the risks associated with mRNA COVID-19 vaccines made by Pfizer and Moderna outweigh the benefits among children.

Speaking to Fox News, Malone said, “I can say that the risk-benefit ratio for those 18 and below doesn’t justify vaccines, and there’s a pretty good chance that it doesn’t justify vaccination in these very young adults.”

LinkedIn’s move to ban Malone is the latest attempt by a Big Tech firm to curb what they describe as “misinformation” regarding COVID-19 vaccines. Recently, Twitter locked Harvard Medical School epidemiologist Martin Kulldorff’s account after he expressed a skeptical viewpoint on whether masks actually provide protection.

And early on in the pandemic, separately, social media firms suspended the accounts of individuals who questioned the origin of COVID-19 while positing that it may have emerged from a high-security laboratory in Wuhan, China, in late 2019. However, in recent months, U.S. officials, including members of the 17-agency Intelligence Community, have begun to question the official narrative from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and World Health Organization officials, who have claimed the virus was transmitted from animals to humans at a wet market.

Irrational Covid Fears

TEAM BLUE, AS YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED, NEVER ANSWERS FOR ANYTHING:

Team Blue Should End Its Unhealthy Obsession With COVID-19 Panic Porn.

“But the frustrating truth of the matter is that Team Blue doesn’t want to hear this. Many people—predominantly liberals—who claim to Follow the Science and Trust the Experts no matter what are nevertheless captivated by pandemic panic porn. By asserting, for instance, that social distancing and masks should be mandatory even for the vaccinated, they bizarrely fixate on the minuscule risk of post-vaccination infection.”

Science!

Even the New York Times is on the case:

Irrational Covid Fears: Why do so many vaccinated people remain fearful? Listen to the professor’s story.

“If you’re vaccinated, a mask is more of a symbol of solidarity than anything else.”

India's Mysterious Fall - CCP WT Heck (Herd Immunity)

India's Mysterious Fall

The rate of new COVID-19 cases reported in India has fallen by 90% since mid-September, with the number of new cases reported across the country averaging just over 11,000. With more than 1.3 billion people and inconsistent healthcare access for rural citizens, India was on pace to surpass the US as the world's epicenter heading into the winter.

Instead, hospital critical care capacity has dropped from 90% to 16% over the same time frame. Experts speculate a mix of herd immunity in urban centers, under-reporting, and possibly some type of preexisting resistance to SARS-CoV-2 may be among the factors. Demographics may also play a role—65% of India's population is under age 35, and less susceptible to severe COVID-19 cases.

In the US, the number of vaccines shipped to states this week will be increased to 13.6 million in total, up from 11 million last week, while almost 40 million people have received at least one vaccine dose. The US has reported 488,801 total COVID-19 deaths, with 1,756 deaths reported yesterday (see data).

Big Pharma Pays-Big for Oxy

McKinsey's Gonna Need More Than a Spoonful of Sugar

Prominent consulting shop McKinsey & Co. has agreed to pay DC and most US states and territories $573 million for its role in the opioid epidemic—the first such nationwide settlement.

The allegations: In 2013, when the impacts of opioids and addiction were already well-documented, the firm advised OxyContin manufacturer Purdue Pharma on how to "supercharge" sales by $100 million, including by targeting doctors who might have overprescribed opioids and by switching patients to more powerful doses.

  • Under the settlement, McKinsey admits no wrongdoing.

Most of the settlement money will head to treatment and rehab programs in areas hit hard by the epidemic, which has killed 400,000+ Americans. $15 million will be used to reimburse the National Association of Attorneys General for investigation costs.

  • The payout is larger than revenues the firm brought in advising opioid clients (a practice it stopped in 2019).

Zoom out: A wave of litigation that started in 2017 against companies linked to the opioid crisis is seeing results. Some pharma companies have reached settlements with individual states; Purdue Pharma agreed to pay the DOJ $8.3 billion; and Johnson & Johnson and three drug distributors are in negotiations for another multistate settlement worth $26 billion.

Pot is Hot - Latest on Legalization

CANNABIS

Pot Is Hot

Francis Scialabba

Let's all just soak in that image for a second before moving on.

Okay, ready.

Yesterday, Jazz Pharmaceuticals announced a $7.2 billion acquisition of GW Pharmaceuticals, a company whose product Epidiolex (a treatment for children with severe epilepsy) was the first cannabinoid to secure FDA approval. Cannabinoid = drug derived from cannabis.

The tie-up is especially notable because pharmaceutical-grade cannabis products tend to have an easier time with regulators than recreational products like the cannabis-laced stroopwafels and cotton candy you can get in states where pot is legal.

It’s one sign of broader momentum in cannabis

Cannabis stocks have been on a roll since President Biden’s election, and bulls have high hopes that his administration will soften the US’ harsh cannabis laws. Pot stocks surged even further this week after three Democratic senators, including Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, pledged to prioritize marijuana reform in the current Congress.

  • The ETFMG Alternative Harvest exchange-traded fund, which tracks cannabis companies, gained almost 10% yesterday alone.

Biden himself has opposed complete legalization, and that’s key because, without federal legalization, pot businesses will stay barred from accessing the federally insured banking system.

The Beltway scoop: Schumer has favored legalization in the past, but the cause could gain momentum now that his party holds a majority in the Senate. Owen Bennett, an analyst at financial services firm Jefferies, wrote in a note to clients that he expects legislation in the not-too-distant future that allows pot businesses to 1) use federally insured banks 2) list on US exchanges and 3) access capital markets.

Hope for Progeria - -Juvenile Rapid-Aging

 Hope for Progeria

Scientists have achieved a potential breakthrough in the fight against progeria, demonstrating that gene editing can fix a key mutation, effectively doubling the life span of diseased mice. The rare and incurable disease, which affects about one in 20 million people, causes children to rapidly age, with most dying from an associated condition in their teens.

The approach relies on a technique similar to CRISPR known as base editing (see the difference), which can modify pieces of genetic code without breaking the DNA backbone. In progeria patients, a single error in the genetic code limits production of a key protein that normally helps shape the cell nucleus. By fixing the error, normal production of the protein—known as lamin A—resumed and many progeria symptoms were alleviated. The achievement, which must be tested in humans, is a key advancement for similar genetic conditions where full CRISPR editing is not feasible.

Brush up on DNA and nucleotides here.

What You Need to Know About Inflammation

What You Need to Know About Inflammation

Chinese medicine and scientific research take many identical views on inflammation's causes and cures

July 20, 2020 Updated: July 20, 2020

What do heart disease, stroke, arthritis, colitis, fibromyalgia, lupus, MS, diabetes, chronic fatigue, and Alzheimer’s have in common? Well, yes, they’re all diseases, but the A-plus answer is that they are all caused by or associated with inflammation.
Scientists are finding that the common cause in a long list of illnesses is an inflammatory process that’s run out of control. Inflammation is an important way the body deals with injury or disease. It is one way the body combats pathogens and burns off dying or infected cells. It is controlled by a group of hormones called prostaglandins, some of which promote, and others that reduce inflammation. You can affect these hormones through a number of factors, including emotions, lifestyle, and especially through diet.
In Chinese medicine, inflammation tends to be associated with heat. Heat is also a primary sign of inflammation. This heat can be very apparent when you have an infection of red and warm arthritic joints. The heat, however, may not be so obvious and can cause more subtle symptoms such as a mild sensation of feeling warm, chronic thirst for cool drinks, irritability, lots of sweating, restlessness, and constipation.
This inflammatory heat can come from a variety of sources. One is through improper diet, which according to Chinese food therapy includes too many spicy, greasy, or rich foods, and sweets. Similarly, eating unhealthy foods can aggravate the body and stir inflammation from a western medical perspective as well. Heat also occurs from stagnation in Chinese medicine.  This simply means that when things don’t move well, it creates a buildup that causes heat.
In your body, anything from your energy or digestion to your emotions can stagnate. If you’ve ever seen someone get hot with anger, that’s an emotional stagnation causing a little heat. While this way of thinking can seem foreign to western minds, this is more than symbolic symmetry. For instance, one common cause of lingering anger is when someone cannot let go of an incident, like an insult. Instead of accepting the situation and moving on with their life, they keep thinking about the situation, fixating on it in an unhealthy manner that stokes their anger.
Western scientists have found that the foods you eat can be pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory. Fats are strongly linked to inflammation because your body makes prostaglandins from fatty acids. Similar to Chinese food theory, the fats that promote inflammation include partially hydrogenated oils/fats, and polyunsaturated oils, such as corn, peanut, and safflower. Also, trans fats, such as margarine or vegetable shortening, and saturated fats, as found in animal products (except fish) promote inflammation.
Now you may be thinking that there’s nothing you can eat, but there are actually one or two healthy choices. Just kidding! There are lots. Anti-inflammatory foods include fish (especially deep-sea fish), fish oils, olive oil, nuts (especially walnuts), ground flax seeds or flaxseed oil, and soy foods.
Other anti-inflammatory foods include colorful fruits and vegetables, known for their high antioxidant content, which also decreases inflammation. In addition, ginger and turmeric, which are both important Chinese herbs, are effective in taming inflammation.
There is a blood test that measures inflammation in your arteries through looking at your levels of C-reactive protein, or CRP. However, if your health insurance plan tends to deny more than approve, a fasting blood insulin test is more likely to be covered and is also an indicator of inflammation. In general, higher insulin levels in your blood means greater inflammation.

Keeping Inflammation in Check

There are several things you can do to keep inflammation under control, or at least reduced.
Maintain an appropriate weight. Fat tissue is an accumulation of dampness, which over time will ultimately turn to heat. Western research specifically links belly fat to inflammation.
Get regular exercise.  It gets energy moving and relieves stress, both of which can contribute to inflammation.  Exercise also improves the health of your heart and lungs. You don’t need to sign up for a triathlon; walking for 20–30 minutes at least four times a week will do the trick.
If you’re a smoker, quit now.  Today. In case you haven’t noticed, smoking creates heat in your body, inflames your lungs, and inhibits your circulation.
Take processed foods off your shopping list.  In most cases, processed foods are made with lots of sugars, trans fats, and chemicals—all of which can contribute to inflammation.  If an item has a long list of ingredients that you can’t pronounce, put it back on the shelf and roll your cart to the produce aisle.
Get your stress under control.  Take a yoga class, do some deep breathing, or visualize your happy place—whatever it takes. Stress is a killer in its own right. Take note of your thinking, as your thoughts have a powerful influence on your emotions and stress reaction.
Floss.  That’s right, pull out the dental string or floss sticks and go to town. There is a direct relationship between gum disease, inflammation, and heart disease.
Get medical care for any infection that doesn’t heal quickly. Again, there’s a direct link between chronic infections and systemic inflammation.
Pay attention to food sensitivities. These can cause inflammatory symptoms, not only in your gut but throughout your body. Some common culprits include grains that contain gluten, dairy foods, and nightshade plants, like tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant. Sugar is a prime culprit as well. If you suffer from digestive problems, you may want to experiment with eliminating those foods that you suspect are causing problems.
