Will the Miami Herald respond?
This is how bad the Miami Herald is.
An embarrassingly awful column by Leonard Pitts Jr. that the Herald somehow allowed to be published, included a quote from Glenn Beck supposedly proving his denial of the Charleston murderers racist motivations:
--
BECK: “I don’t know why this shooter shot people. He might shoot people because he’s a racist. He might have shot people because he’s an anarchist. He might have shot people because he hates Christians.”
--
He goes on, asking Glenn and others:
--
HERALD: "For all of you, a simple question: What the hell is wrong with you people? Why is it so hard for you to call racism racism?"
--
Actually, look at the quote from Glenn. It doesn't seem to be that hard at all, considering the very first thing Glenn listed as a possible motivation for the murders was racism. The first thing.

The Herald columnist ends his criticism of Glenn wondering why he "has such difficulty being that definitive about a white man who drove 100 miles to shoot up a black church."
Here's a possibility: perhaps he had difficulty recognizing that because none of that information was known at the time of the quote.
The column, released on June 23rd, makes no mention of the fact that Glenn said the quote in question on June 18th - less than 12 hours after Dylan Roof started shooting. In fact, the quote was from the first break of the first show following the shooting, before Roof was even identified as a suspect. No one knew he had "driven 100 miles to shoot up a black church" at that time.
But wait-- the Miami Herald gets worse.
During the news break of that radio show in question, we were reading some of the information leaking out about the shooter- like some of his racist Facebook posts and pictures, as well as his identity finally being released.
In the VERY NEXT SEGMENT Glenn Beck said this:
--
BECK: Looks like we have a name now of the killer. And we have some Facebook posts. It looks like he is a straight-up racist.
--
Literally, the first opportunity after becoming aware of any information about the killer, Glenn referred to him as a "straight-up racist."

This was not included in the Miami Herald column.
Nor, was Glenn's quote from the next hour:
--
BECK: We have a pretty good idea he was a radical racist.
--
Nor, was Glenn's quote from the first hour of the next days show.
--
BECK: We have race problems all around the country. Was this guy a bad racist? You bet he was.
--
You get the idea. Glenn identified Dylann Roof as a racist over and over and over and over again. At no point did he shy away from calling him a racist. The only time he even allowed for any other possibility was in the hours before there was any information about the killer, and even then-- speculated racist motivations as the very first option.

Was Glenn supposed to definitively conclude what his motivations were without any information beyond complete speculation? Would the Miami Herald be comfortable with that standard?
This column, or at least the part regarding Glenn Beck should be retracted, and/or corrected.
Whether the Miami Herald wants a guy who is this lazy in his research working for their organization is up to them. But, I sure wouldn't.
