YouTube
is implementing a three-pronged strategy to stifle
hate speech on its platform.
Prong 1: No more claims of group
superiority “based on qualities
like age, gender, race, caste, religion, sexual orientation or veteran
status.” That's code for political ideologies like Nazism.
Prong 2: No more
recommending/monetizing “borderline” content that furthers extreme theories about
conspiracy-ripe topics like vaccination or 9/11. That'll lead to changes for
YouTube’s recommendation algorithm, which is responsible for over 70% of
overall time spent on the platform.
Prong 3: No more monetization
options for creators who toe the line, or “repeatedly brush up against”
YouTube’s hate speech policies.
While we’re here...YouTube got ratioed Tuesday after it
said racist, homophobic language from a prominent conservative creator,
Steven Crowder, toward journalist Carlos Maza didn’t violate its policies. Critics started
chanting “free pass” and YouTube changed its mind.
That brings us to the bottom
line: Making
rules is one thing. Enforcing them is a
whole other ball game—especially when 500+ hours of new videos are uploaded
to YouTube every minute.
